HQ: Gainesville, FL NOW PLAYING: Faces In Architecture EP THE STORY SO FAR: The goal when Building The State assembled in 2003 was to write "Dischord Records-influenced post-punk," reveals guitarist/vocalist Justin Tzuanos, but thanks to member changes, they instead became the best atmospheric indie rock band Sub Pop Records never signed. "We noticed a marked change in songwriting chemistry [for our latest EP]," says Tzuanos. "The songs are darker and more complex with a wider variety of influences." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: They're huge in Japan-well, according to Tzuanos, at least. "Oddly, we sell a good amount of records there through Stiff Slack Records and Linus Records in Tokyo." If the internet buzz they're building stateside is any indication, their lush, ethereal brand of indie (think Explosions In The Sky with vocals) is about to become huge at home, too. Tzuanos has an explanation for all the attention: "We're 80 percent sonic integrity," he says, "and 20 percent raw sex appeal." -Tim Karan YOU LIKE?
