HQ: Brooklyn, NY NOW PLAYING: The Whale THE STORY SO FAR: Doing construction on log homes in Wyoming apparently leads to writing catchy, earnest, alt-country-inspired indie rock. That's if frontman Beau Jennings' experience in 2001 is any indication. "The weather and the landscape" had something to do with the inspiration, he says. But so did reading a book about Wyoming by one of his construction clients, Brokeback Mountain author Annie Proulx. When he returned to Oklahoma motivated by fresh air and Americana, he recorded an EP with friends in Ester Drang and assembled a band, opening for the likes of Sebadoh and John Vanderslice. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: You can take the boy out of Oklahoma (Jennings relocated to Brooklyn to record The Whale), but the boy will take his Oklahoma pride (and memorabilia) with him to create songs that evoke the vastness of the plains. "We rehearse under a giant Oklahoma flag," he says. "We're also thinking of hosting tailgate parties before each show." [Tim Karan] YOU LIKE?
