HQ: Sheffield, U.K. NOW PLAYING: The Mathlete EP (actionier.co.uk) THE STORY SO FAR: Following his departure from Sheffield's 65daysofstatic, vocalist and guitarist Iain Armstrong circulated an ad for his next project with the J. Foxian headline "When the DeLorean hits 88 mph!" and soon recruited guitarist Simon Linskill, drummer Sam Dougherty and bassist Tom Doyle for his kinetic, math-rock "dream band." Doyle says, "There must be something in the beer this way because we had a mass of people just as excited about the music as we were before we'd played a gig." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: The Mathlete EP-which was picked up by BBC Radio 1 (which Doyle reminds is "The biggest freaking radio station this side of the pond,") contains a melodic cross-section of Dillinger-esque time signature abuse and Fugazi post-sing-alongs. "Why write music to nod your head to when you can write music to save the world to?" poses Doyle. "Listen with open ears and pretend you're a superhero." YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: BEAR VS.
