Amplexus

HQ: Kent, OH
NOW PLAYING: Deus Ex Machina (myspace.com/amplexusrock)

THE STORY SO FAR: Amplexus kept finishing second in battles of the bands. Were they disheartened? "Nope," says guitarist Billy Liber. "We decided they sucked and quit playing them." It's that fortitude that's seen the band self-release their debut and embark on their own tour last summer. "We're usually too heavy [to play with] melodic bands and too melodic for straight metal bands," says Liber. "But we'll get in the ring with anybody!"

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: After sustaining on "cheap rum and Edward Scissorhands" during a five-month writing session for Deus Ex Machina (that's "God out of a machine"), Amplexus cultivated lush, literary post-hardcore that would fit neatly on a Receiving End Of Sirens tour. Until then, however, they're happy being patient. "The only place we want to be is back in a hot van on our way to play shows," says Liber, "and that's what we're going to do."
