When If Only You Were Lonely came out in 2006, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS seemed on top of the world-they were young, happy and vying to have the No. 1 record in the country. But two years of legal battles took its toll on all fronts, especially the band's bank accounts. When HH spent six weeks in California recording their new album, they ran out of money-all of it. --Kyle Ryan "Right at the time people found out we were going to be re-signing to Victory, everybody was like, 'I bet they got paid so much money,' all this stuff," Ridenour says. "When we were leaving the hotel after we were done to come back home, we didn't have any money-like no money-so we just bounced! Then to drop off the rental car, still had no money. Dropped it off, bounced." [Laughs.] Of course, both the hotel and the rental-car company had their credit card info on file, so it wasn't like Hawthorne Heights were complete deadbeats. "We were waiting to sign to Victory still, so we had no clue when any money was going to be coming in," Ridenour says. "Since we had no money between the four of us, we just bounced. We would've gotten billed, but at the time, we had no idea when or how we were going to be able to pay for a rental car or hotel. So we figured if they billed us, that would at least buy us another week to find a bag of money laying on the side of the road." They still haven't found that bag, but Hawthorne's situation has since stabilized.-Kyle Ryan
