KEEPING THE FAITHFor every band preaching about Christian values, there are a hundred yammering on about anarchy and devil worship. But it's the Christian bands who seem to take the most heat. ANBERLIN vocalist Stephen Christian--who has never classified the band as remotely evangelical--says, "a lot of overtly Christian music is some of the most formulaic and unoriginal music I've ever heard," continuing, "Which is why I really admire bands like mewithoutYou, who are doing something completely new and amazing both musically and lyrically--they're changing the stigma." Anberlin may play down the association, but they have been affectionately referred to as "preachermen" by many touring partners and Christian's blog frequently (and quite eloquently, we might add) centers around its author's personal struggles with philosophy and faith. "We definitely are a band with a platform," says Christian in regard to their involvement with charity organizations including Faceless International, World Vision and To Write Love On Her Arms. But none of those are more than loosely faith-based. Describing the connection on New Surrender, he elaborates, "I tried to address issues that go beyond one faith--homelessness, war, poverty--issues where my perspective is certainly influenced and inspired by my faith, but not issues that we shouldn't all be educated on. This stuff matters, and you certainly don't have to be Christian, Jewish, Muslim or anything to understand that." --Kevin Wade |
