ASSOCIATE EDITOR
YOU: A talented and ambitious associate editor with a genuine passion for music.
US: A globally distributed music magazine.
You may be asking yourself, "Am I a talented and ambitious associate editor?"
You may also be asking yourself, "What's an associate editor?"
We've got the answer for the second one. What's an associate editor?
Our associate editor is in the middle of all the excitement at AP. You’ll be responsible for a little bit of everything. You’ll oversee more than a dozen front-of-book sections of the magazine, which means staying on top of current (and soon-to-be current) trends and knowing which bands are going to be setting the world on fire way before anyone else does. You’ll be assigning pieces to a fleet of capable freelancers, but you’ll also be doing a lot of writing yourself. That means you’ll be interviewing and hobnobbing with tons of your heroes, working closely with publicists and record labels and in time, contributing to most other sections of the publication and website—from record reviews to feature stories. You’ll also be involved in most of the big decisions at the magazine—from who to put on the cover to what to order for dinner when you work the occasional late night. Along with our other editors, you’ll also be copy editing and approving every single page of editorial that goes in the magazine. This is an excellent foot-in-the-door, and we really want you to grow into more responsibilities.
Now to tackle that first question you might have had. Am I an associate editor?
- If you can honestly say “yes” to any of the following statements, you just might be:
- I've got a bachelor's degree in journalism or English.
- I've been writing or editing for a print publication or music website for three or four years and I can supply clips and/or links to prove it.
- I'm pretty meticulous with details and ridiculously organized.
- I've got a firm grasp of grammar, Associated Press Style and I can copy edit.
- I know pretty much everything about HTML and Microsoft Word.
- I've got contacts in the music industry and a decent knowledge of the business.
- Music is my life. Seriously. I'm not a sports writer who's just saying that to get a job.
Sound good? Just wait. If we hire you, you'll also be able to honestly say any of the following statements:
I make a competitive salary.
I have health and dental insurance (even vision).
I have a simple IRA
I work in an extremely casual environment where the only dress code is no socks under sandals.
I receive nearly my weight in free CDs every week, and I harldy ever pay to go to shows (unless it's for, like, the Rolling Stones).
I work with about 20 incredibly interesting, fun and passionate people.
Think you're ready?
