Fightstar

HQ: London, England
NOW PLAYING: Grand Unification (Trustkill)

THE STORY SO FAR: Fightstar frontman Charlie Simpson is no stranger to success. His former band, guitar-pop trio Busted, set a Guinness World Record when they sold out London's Wembley Arena six nights in a row. However, as another U.K. artist would say, "a grand don't come for free." Discouraged with his lack of creative outlet in a "boy band," Simpson began jamming with his then-roommate (and future Fightstar guitarist) Alex Westaway, and found a way back to his roots. "I just wasn't into what I was doing before," says Simpson. "The whole time I was thinking... I ought to be playing the music I'd grown up playing." Soon after, he left Busted and, along with Dan Haigh (bass) and Omar Abidi (drums), the band released Grand Unification in the U.K. last year. After touring with the likes of Funeral For A Friend, Trustkill Records picked up Fightstar for last April's North American release of the album.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: After touring the U.S. with Madina Lake in May and gearing up for their second tour with Funeral For A Friend this month, the only tension within this post-hardcore quartet is in the music. "It's kind of the fusion of dark and light," says Simpson of Fightstar's aggressive-meets-yearning sound. "We tend to blend really heavy stuff with much more mellow, atmospheric sounds. We love the whole dynamic of really, really heavy, and then-within the same song-really, really chilled out and quiet." -Rachel Lux
