HQ: San Diego, CANOW PLAYING: American Art (Doghouse) THE STORY SO FAR: After guitarist/vocalist Brian Warren spent time in what he calls a "really terrible cock-rock band" called My American Heart, he formed Weatherbox to play the kind of melodic indie music he wanted to hear at the less violent shows he'd likely attend. "Weatherbox is more free and happy as opposed to being dark and angry," he says. After releasing the critically-lauded The Clearing EP in 2006 and after Warren locked the revolving membership door behind bassist Ryan Hill, drummer Justin Greene and guitarist Lowell Heflin, the result is their powerful and infectious self-produced debut, American Art. Sound vaguely familiar? "I foolishly spray-painted [My American Heart] on my gear," he says. "I covered the 'My' and 'He' and that's how I got [our new] album title." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Despite Warren's and Heflin's absolutely amazing guitar tone, Warren remains the consummate, unsatisfied perfectionist. "American Art isn't so much an album as a collection of all the songs we've recorded," he says. "We did it on our own time without a producer. For the next album, we plan to get a producer and have a forceful, meaningful album rather than 'a bunch of songs.'" If he can speak so dismissively about the album's indie-pop ragers like "Atoms Smash" and "A Flock of Weatherboxes," the future holds great promise. Let's just hope they're still playing those tunes in five years along with all the new ones. -Kevin Stewart-Panko YOU LIKE?
