Pierce The Veil

NOW PLAYING: A Flair For The Dramatic (EQUAL VISION)

THE STORY SO FAR: Vic (vocals/guitars) and Mike Fuentes (drums) were the driving forces behind the propulsive melodic punk outfit Before Today, which disbanded in 2005 just as they were gaining momentum. Instead of simply re-tooling that lineup, the brothers began experimenting with ambitious song structures and personal lyrics, beginning anew as Pierce The Veil (itself a resurrected Before Today song title). "As we got older, we got away from the fast punk-rock scene and started appreciating a lot more different styles of music," says Vic. "From the beginning, we tried to write something that was very diverse and very open so that in the future, we could go any direction we'd want."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Having reinvented themselves as ceiling-free, post-hardcore wunderkinds, the brothers Fuentes recorded all of the instruments (save some keyboard and programming) that compose A Flair For The Dramatic, with only producer Casey Bates (Portugal. The Man) looking on. Buoyed by shape-shifting, vitriolic rock underpinnings, PTV effortlessly infuse everything from acoustics to electronics in their new assault. But to hear big brother tell it, he's less concerned with what they've created than how they achieved it. "The record really feels great because it was just me and my brother," says Vic. "It makes playing live an emotional experience. Every word means a lot to me. And I think you can tell that every word is honest." Tristan Staddon
