HQ: Long Beach, CA NOW PLAYING: Droid (Emotional Syphon ) THE STORY SO FAR: Korn guitarist James "Munky" Schaffer probably never expected the kid who years earlier offered him free Taco Bell in exchange for guitar lessons would end up forming the first band he'd sign to his Emotional Syphon label, but things have a weird way of working out. Droid singer James "Buddy" Eason-who growls and screams on record like a minotaur passing kidney stones-says after some musical missteps, his hardcore outfit finally took shape when they cut something negligible-the bullshit. "We got caught up in trying find the radio song," he says. "But I grew up in hardcore and metal and that's not what I'm from." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Sure they've got powerful friends (Deftones' Chino Moreno guests on their album), but Droid know they need to prove their place in the spotight. "Get out there [onstage] and sweat and bleed," says Eason. "He who has the most heart wins." And on their self-titled debut, there's heart aplenty-along with spleen, guts and fists of fury. But there's rhythm, too. "I think we're bringing groove back without being a funk band," Eason says. "We'll always be metal and we've got some insane parts, but we also get a lot of non-metal people telling us that we just make them want to move." Luke O'Neil LIKE?
