THE STORY SO FAR: Four Star Alarm began the way many bands do-with a breakup. Following the demise of The Story So Far in 2002, guitarist Jeff Dean (the Bomb) continued writing undeterred. "I had all these songs and knew they weren't something I could just sit on," he says, referring to demos he recorded with Derek Grant of Alkaline Trio. "[It] just came down to finding the right people [to play with]." That turned out to be bassist Greg Mytych (the Reputation, Horace Pinker), touring vocalist Theodore Moss and the band's most recent addition, drummer Eric Kane (Strike Anywhere). Since the band debuted on Thick Records in 2006, they've enjoyed a steady ascension in the Chicago scene.
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Four Star Alarm readily admit their mature take on postmodern '90s punk stems from an instinctual need to create. With a lineup who have all individually flirted with hardcore, punk and everything in between, the band's debut EP unleashes a collection of songs that manage to punch you in the face with aggression and explain why with melody. Dean says, "For us, songwriting still involves those moments when we play something live and know that there is nothing else we could really want to do for a living." -Ramon Gonzales
