HQ: Lakeland, FL NOW PLAYING: Wooden Teeth (LUJO RECORDS; lujorecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Like it does for many Floridian teenagers, skateboarding came first for buddies Joey Bruce (vocals, guitar) and Shane Schuch (guitar, keyboard). But it wasn't long before the music they were playing during time not spent kick-flipping became priority No. 1. About a year and half ago, the duo enlisted Justin Cason (bass) and Aaron Venrick (drums), borrowed their name from an unusual news headline and officially became Mouse Fire. Quickly, Bruce says, the members realized the lineup was something special. "I can honestly say that without one of the other guys we're not the same band." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: If you find yourself scratching your head after listening to the indie-meets-dance pop of Mouse Fire, don't feel bad-the band aren't sure what to make of their sound, either. "I know it's indie rock, but there's something else that goes into it," says Bruce. "Maybe we have a little more to offer than just 'indie.'" On Wooden Teeth, the band combine the familiar sounds of Modest Mouse and the Faint, emerging with a tone they light-heartedly hope fans embrace. "We can't be some epic rock band," says Bruce. "But we get away with what we're doing." -Kelly Delaney YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: ON / MINUS THE BEAR / PINBACK |
