The Maine

HQ: Tempe, AZ
NOW PLAYING: The Way We Talk EP (FEARLESS; fearlessrecords.com)
THE STORY SO FAR: Eleven months. That's the amount of time that elapsed between vocalist John O'Callaghan auditioning for his friends' soon-to-be pop (meets '90s alternative) band and the Maine releasing their debut EP The Way We Talk through Fearless. It was only a month after that audition that the MySpace sensations (O'Callaghan, guitarists Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco, bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Pat Kirch) played live for the first time, opening for This Providence. "In retrospect, [the show] probably went horribly," says O'Callaghan. "[But] right after I got off stage, I was like, 'I wanna go back!'"
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Aside from their ridiculously fast scene ascent and their rampant internet buzz (that first show drew nearly 600 fans just from MySpace and word-of-mouth and their EP has held the No. 1 spot on SmartPunk's Top 100, The Maine are still discovering their sound. "Our older songs were kind of like a collection of songs with the same tempo and the same speed; it was pop for sure," says O'Callaghan. But their "newer" songs hint at the areas of emotion and artistry they're ready to explore in the future. "We have a really positive outlook," says O'Callaghan. "We're just really excited to get out on the road and play for people." -Kelly Delaney
