THE STORY SO FAR: In 2006, when Maverick dropped Canadian post-hardcore unit Stutterfly, their vocalist abandoned the sinking ship. The remaining members recruited singer Charles Furney (thebleedingalarm) and renamed themselves Secret & Whisper in early 2007. With a jaded industry view and few expectations, the five-piece began recording demos with a new musical direction in mind. "We thought, 'This is probably going to fail anyway, so we might as well do it for the reasons we want to do it,'" says Furney. "We went in with very realistic expectations that we probably wouldn't get signed."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: With no interest in making music to appease the masses, the band fine-tuned their melodic new sound, which draws from atmospheric rock with Furney providing Anthony Green-esque vocals. "After being on big labels and making music that was 'popular' and then getting dropped, we figured we should just make the music we wanted to," says Furney. "If something happened, that would be cool. If nothing did, that would be cool, too." Nobody must have informed Tooth & Nail, since the label snagged the band and put them to work on February's Great White Whale--an album that was a year in the making. But that's all secondary to the band now. "At least we're not going to be embarrassed of our music," says Furney. "We'll actually be proud of it." --Emily Zemler
