In 2005, the prize was a slot playing before headliners and hometown heroes Silverstein (who descended upon Central Park in a helicopter). Up until that day, Metalcore outfit Dead And Divine had only a paper-sleeve EP and a handful of shows to their name, according to guitarist Chris LeMasters. But after winning the contest and the coveted opening slot, everything changed. "[Silverstein frontman] Shane Told said, 'Dudes, I think you're awesome,' which must've been a lie," says LeMasters, laughing. "Because we were brutal." But Told staked his claim, creating Verona Records specifically for D&D, who he's managed since. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Immediately expel any notion that Dead And Divine had anything given to them. The five-piece (currently vocalist Matt Tobin, guitarists LeMasters and Dave McGuire, bassist Kellan Lindsay and drummer Ryan Leger) are some of the fiercest road warriors in Canada, logging four headlining tours and unleashing their ferocious brand of melodic (American) Southern metal alongside countrymen Protest The Hero, Cancer Bats and Moneen. Their Rise debut, The Fanciful, is a concept album recorded with minimal Pro Tools help. "Not that we're doing anything that insanely different," says LeMasters. "But we'd love to be considered the thinking man's metal band." --Tim Karan YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: EVERY TIME I DIE / THRICE / POISON THE WELL |
