NOW PLAYING:Plastic Bag Ambitions (LOLLIPOP/TKO; tkorecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Former Gasolheads singer Olivier Gasoil knew there was something special in the air two years ago when he got into a room with the trio of retro-futurist weirdoes who'd eventually comprise his new band. "The very first rehearsal, we found out that maybe something will come out of that big joke," says the now-Hatepinks frontman, who, in very non-punk fashion, stops to apologize for his broken English. "We made four songs in two hours!" Three albums and several singles later, the Hatepinks are acutely aware that it's high time to take over the U.S. before this whole thing just caves in on itself. "Can you imagine a band doing more than three good albums?" Gasoil says. "I can't." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: We'd like to think it's a compliment when AP tells the Hatepinks they're the best '77-style, neon-bedecked, sunglasses-wearing punk band from France we've ever encountered, but there's something about that language barrier... "That English language is really funny, motherfuquer!" Gasoil reminds us in his own funny way. "The definitive thing that should convince you of our greatness is that we got good haircuts," he adds as clarification. "And we use good instruments, all painted in pink, and we try to tune them sometimes. We are a good band because our instruments are tuned." He stops for a moment.
