NOW PLAYING:Promises For The Imperfect (TOOTH & NAIL; toothandnail.com)

THE STORY SO FAR:With an acclaimed debut album (2003's Celebrate Mistakes) under their belt, Number One Gun signed to Tooth & Nail earlier this year and soon afterward hit the studio again, this time with melodic-rock producer du jour Aaron Sprinkle, to crank out their label debut. "Those seven weeks spent with Aaron were some of the best times we've ever had as a band," says singer Jeff Schneeweis. "And the way we thought everything turned out for our new record was more than we expected." As early fan responses to Promises For The Imperfect proved, same goes for the rest of the planet.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:The old scream-sing thing's become such a given for young rock bands, you keep waiting for a guttural roar to shatter the driving melodies of Promises For The Imperfect. Thankfully, it never comes, and the result is a guitar-driven powerhouse of an album that's more jarring for its prettiness than for its volume. Which isn't to say Number One Gun can't cut loose when duty calls. "We like to have fun at our shows, and not be just another boring band that sits down in the back after they play," says Schneeweis. "Onstage, we like to have a fun, energetic show that keeps people on their feet. Well, at least we try to!" -Bart Ng
