NOW PLAYING: This Is Hell EP (STATE OF MIND; stateofmindrecordings.com) THE STORY SO FAR:Formed from the ashes of three of Long Island's most promising but short-lived hardcore bands in recent years-Scraps And Heart Attacks, the Backup Plan and Subterfuge-This Is Hell seem to have worked out any of the kinks that hindered their members in the past. "With all of our previous bands, none were ever that serious or consisted of five dudes that were all on the same page," says vocalist Travis Reilly. "With This Is Hell, we found that." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:"Some people might know us from our previous bands," Reilly admits, "but I think people should really know us because we bust our ass. We played over 200 shows internationally over the course of a year, on just a demo CD-R." Luckily, the band have finally put out a proper release, 2005's self-titled EP. And if the five originals on it don't pummel you into submission, just wait until you hear their cover of 108's "When Death Closes Your Eyes," featuring Daryl Palumbo, who delivers a blood-curdling scream not heard since Glassjaw's heyday. "[Daryl] actually was supposed to be on tour with Head Automatica [during recording], but got sick and called the tour off; lucky for us, he was around to do it," Reilly says. "We are super-happy with the way it came out." So are we, Travis. -Scott Heisel YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: Scraps And Heart Attacks/ With Honor / Give Up The Ghost |
