NOW PLAYING: Hope For The Haunted (POP UP)

THE STORY SO FAR:Melody can come from the most dissonant of things-just ask Lakota bassist Carlos Ramirez. "I played in a grind band called Black Army Jacket in the mid-'90s but had stopped playing altogether by 2000," he says. "Then in 2001, Kayne [Konecny, singer/guitarist] played me a demo he was working on. I was floored by the quality of his voice, and we decided to explore writing new material together." Signed by Further Seems Forever guitarist Derick Cordoba to his label, Pop Up Records, the band spent much of 2005 touring (alongside FSF, even) before entering the studio with Jamie Woolford (The Stereo/Let Go) to record their debut full-length. "I was a huge fan of the Stereo," Ramirez gushes, "so when he jumped onboard the project, I nearly lost it!"

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:The only thing better than Lakota's modesty is their knack for writing slabs of mid-'90s pop-rock that are influenced as much by Dave Grohl as by Bob Mould. "We have a profound admiration for '90s bands like Samiam, Catherine Wheel and Sugar," Ramirez admits. "I think we revisit that kind of feel in our writing. Hopefully people dig what we do and seek out the bands that got us here." -Scott Heisel
