HQ: Orange County, CA

NOW PLAYING: Mikoto EP (LEVEL PLANE)

THE STORY SO FAR: After the 2004 breakups of California hardcore group Taken and Iowa emocore progenitors Preacher Gone To Texas, Ray Harkins (vocalist of the former) and Matt Moody (guitarist/vocalist of the latter) found each other in the O.C., and the rest, as they say, is history. "Mikoto got a head start because of our previous hard work," says Harkins. That head start has included a rabid fanbase in SoCal, the release of their debut EP through the tastemaking hardcore label Level Plane, and shows alongside groups ranging from Unearth to Silverstein to HORSE The Band.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: "[We're] about passion, sweat and hard work," Harkins says. "Nothing is handed over easy in life, and being in a band should reflect that." Not only are their hearts in the right place, but so is their musical ability: The mixture of Harkins' guttural yells and Moody's passionate clean vocals are potent and refreshing in a scene that's become watered down. "Many people these days start bands for the sheer sake of wanting to get 'famous' and stand for absolutely nothing," Harkins says dismissively. "We may not be setting the world on fire, but we sure are doing it from the heart, and for the right reasons." -Scott Heisel
