NOW PLAYING: Dead Under Decor (ABACUS) THE STORY SO FAR: Simply put, Bleeding Kansas aren't your ordinary hardcore band. Formed in 2001, the four-piece took their name from radical abolitionist John Brown's slayings of plantation and slave owners, which sparked an era known as Bleeding Kansas. "The name comes from someone who stood firmly for what he believed, and that's what we do with our music," says drummer Daniel Pouliot. Inspired by multiple genres, as well as bands ranging from Weezer and Say Anything to Norwegian avant-jazz collective Jaga Jazzist, BK's members' musical differences help make the band unique. "Our own influences mesh well together," Pouliot says, "even though we don't all like the same kind of music." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: While the band have spent big chunks of time on the road with bands such as Cursed, Breather Resist and Converge, their most influential trek was from California to Massachusetts where they recorded their new full-length, Dead Under Decor, at Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou's God City Studios. "Each night, we tried different things with our songs, and this helped shape the record," says Pouliot. And while the music may be loud, their message comes across even louder: The band's first EP, 2004's 1859, lyrically discusses slavery and rebellion, while Dead Under Decor takes on a rampant trend in today's music scene. "Music isn't about fashion," Pouliot states. "It's about heart, songwriting and ethics. We're disgusted with people who are trying to hide under their clothes. We stand against people being dead under their decor." -Kristin Bustamante YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: Botch / Black Flag / The Jesus Lizard |
