NOW PLAYING: In The Shadow Of Two Gunmen (VICTORY)

THE STORY SO FAR: Mega-indie Victory Records released the Forecast's stellar debut, Late Night Conversations, last year to little fanfare--not surprising, really, as the band aren't flashy. They play Midwestern punk without shtick (i.e., no make-up--well, maybe bassist Shannon Burns) but with a similarly Midwestern work ethic: Barely a year has passed since Conversations, and they have a brand-new disc, In The Shadow Of Two Gunmen. On it, the band--completed by guitarist Matt Webb and drummer Tony Peck--incorporate some roots-rock twang with their post-punk chops. "Late Night was us trying to find ourselves and trying to figure out exactly what we want to do," says singer/guitarist Dustin Addis. "Really, I think we just grew up. We just really wanted to take our time with this. We set out to make a really rock record--a raw, good rock record."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:Other Victory bands may get all the glory, but the Forecast are Victory's sleeper cell: a potent rock band waiting for the right moment to strike. "When we released Late Night Conversations, a lot of people we were really caught off guard--'Well, this is a weird release for Victory,'" Addis says. "Hopefully, everybody was able to digest it, and after a certain point [say], 'Oh, wait--this is all right.'" With lots of touring lined up for this summer--including a stretch with labelmates June--The Forecast may be sleeping no longer--Kyle Ryan
