NOW PLAYING: Far From The Lies (RECORD COLLECTION) THE STORY SO FAR: Here's some juicy fodder for the haters on message boards: The five dudes in Greeley Estates didn't have a clue how to play music three years ago. "We started this whole band thing as a joke," singer Ryan Zimmerman admits. "Three years ago, none of us had ever played our instruments before. Our first show was the first time I'd really ever picked up a microphone. Our lead guitarist had started playing guitar the year before, and he was teaching our other guitarist." But a little bit of practice, a self-released debut recorded in eight days in their living room (2004's Outside Of This) and a stint on Warped Tour secured the group a label deal (which bought them a little longer than eight days' studio time) and a sophomore LP, Far From The Lies. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Whereas some kids are all talk and no action, Greeley Estates parlayed an innocent joke into a career path Zimmerman and crew (guitarists Brandon Hackenson and Dallas Smith, bassist Josh Applebach and drummer Brian Champ) had only daydreamed about-a fact that Zimmerman feels gives them a connection to their fans that some bands are missing. "I think that's always brought us down a little as a band because kids see that we're not out of reach at all." Plus, their parents hate their music, which pretty much assures that you'll love it. Zimmerman laughs and says, "We said from the start, the day our parents like our music is the day we're doing something wrong." --Emily Zemler YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: Thursday / Glassjaw / Emanuel |
