HQ: Buffalo, NY NOW PLAYING: Bitter Verses (FERRET; ferretstyle.com) THE STORY SO FAR: It was 2004, and at 30 years-old, guitarist Jeremy Smith just couldn't shake his hardcore pride. Having learned a thing or two about the scene with his former bands-No Reason and the Control-he recruited an intergenerational group of passionate players to form Dead Hearts. The outfit quickly emerged as torchbearers for some of the more traditional aspects of hardcore music-in terms of both sound and content. With releases on State Of Mind Records and Reflections Records stoking the fire, Dead Hearts' aggressive punk was soon making rooms explode from coast to coast. Before long, hometown neighbor and Every Time I Die guitarist Andy Williams took notice, putting the band on the radar of Ferret Music, who later signed them. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: In mid 2006, Dead Hearts entered the studio with John Naclerio (My Chemical Romance, Senses Fail) to lay down Bitter Verses, a concept album about insomnia. "We sat down and wrote an honest piece of music that really explores what it's like to be a human being and to have feelings," says Smith. "A lot of bands seem to be going through the motions; sure, the songs are catchy or tough or whatever, but the lyrics don't ring true-they just sound nice." And Dead Hearts apply the same attitude to touring. "The money's not that great," says Smith. "But I think the quality of what you're doing is [more important] than the money you're making." - Ronen Kauffman YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: MODERN LIFE IS WAR / BANE / SICK OF IT ALL |
