HQ: Brick, NJ NOW PLAYING: Euphoria (ROCK OUT; rockoutrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Echo Screen are the Transformers of indie rock: There's more to this poppy quartet than meets the eye. For instance, when you listen to "Rushmore," their cut from last year's Drive-Thru Records/PureVolume compilation, you'd never know the band is heavily influenced by video games. And not only are the band-vocalist/guitarist Shaune Scutellaro, guitarist Nick Singleton, bassist Tim Sager and drummer Mike Badders-hopelessly addicted to games like Halo 2, the name Echo Screen itself is taken from Final Fantasy (it's an item that cures "silence"). You'd also never know that Scutellaro's dad got the band signed. Sort of. "He talked us up with a random guy he met at a conference," says Scutellaro. "And that guy ended up passing our CD onto Rock Out Records and they signed us. Thanks Dad!" WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because the band's debut full-length Euphoria is filled with some of the best pop-punk infused tunes around. And the band aren't afraid to play midwife to the soul of a song. "You remember back when you were 14 and you didn't know anything about time signatures or chord changes?," says Scutellaro. "All you heard was what I call the 'soul' of a song. It's that, 'Hey man play that song again' factor. We're not afraid to give each song its own soul, even if it's not what John XYZ at some club wants to hear." - Casey Lynch YOU LIKE?
