Vanna

HQ: Boston, MA
NOW PLAYING: Curses (EPITAPH)

THE STORY SO FAR: Massachusetts College of Art gave Vanna's founding members Nick Lambert (guitar/vocals), Evan Pharmakis (guitar/vocals) and Shawn Marquis (bass) more than they signed up for. After meeting on campus in mid-2004, the fledgling metal outfit began one of the quickest journeys to the big-time on record. "I was writing music in my dorm room," says Lambert. "I did the drum parts with Reason [software] on my computer. Everything happened from there pretty quick." He ain't kidding. By early 2005, the guys added vocalist Chris Preece, replaced Lambert's computer with drummer Brandon Davis, began playing shows and then, bam! "We got featured on PureVolume and got like 5,000 plays a day and by the end of the week, Brett Gurewitz from Epitaph called us," says Lambert. "We thought it was a friend fucking with us, but it was him."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because the kick-to-the-groin breakdowns and soaring choruses on their debut Curses are only matched in intensity by their DIY work ethic. "We caught a lot of flack for being signed so quick," Lambert says. "But what were we supposed to do? Say no to Epitaph?" And don't think that means they've got it easy now. "We book our own tours and we're rocking our Dodge 3500 with a 5-foot by 8-foot trailer behind it in Canada in two feet of snow," he says. "We're paying our dues." -Casey Lynch
