The Vincent Black Shadow

THE STORY SO FAR: Cassandra Ford was perilously close to becoming another music industry casualty. The sultry, cabaret-inspired Philippines native and frontwoman for the Vincent Black Shadow was once recruited to cut an album with Universal Philippines only to discover that the company's actual vision was to make her an Asian pop star. "They turned it into an acoustic thing like Jewel," she says. Dissatisfied, she returned to Canada and began to developing TVBS with long-time friend and guitarist Rob Kirkham-who enlisted his brothers Anthony (drums) and Chris (bass). After adding keyboardist Mary Ancheta, the lineup was complete.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: After the release of their debut last summer, TVBS have claimed No. 1 video spots on Fuse and sealed a spot on this summer's Warped Tour. Ford-who says she's influenced by show tunes and video game music (she was once a video game tester for EA Games)-has a vocal range that's best described as Gwen Stefani's early No Doubt days with a foundation rooted in '40s swing. Although they're sure their brand of danceable rock will win over crowds on Warped, Ford knows it's never easy breaking out of the mold. "Uniqueness can be a hindrance," she says. But with intriguing music and relatable lyrics, TVBS won't be in the shadows for long. - Adam K. Zakroczymski III
