Paul Baribeau - Grand Ledge

Eighteen minutes and nine seconds. That's all the time it takes for Michigan native Paul Baribeau to become the king of the folk-punk hill on Grand Ledge, his second proper album. Baribeau's short narratives range from frantic, peppy numbers designed to motivate ("Ten Things") to lamenting over a lost love ("Falling In Love With Your Best Friend")-not the most original topics, for sure. But what makes each song individualistic and strongly memorable are the way Baribeau abuses his acoustic guitar (seriously, it's a wonder the thing didn't crack in half during the recording of "Christmas Lights"), how he boldly places himself in his lyrics ("Nothing To Say" is just brutally honest) and most important, the unbelievable amount of unbridled passion he pours into his vocal delivery, from softly sung pop melodies ("Like Bells") to hollered choruses ("Hard Work"). For fans of Woodie Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Gabel, Andrew W.K., beards and awesome things in general. (PLAN-IT-X) Scott Heisel
