Chasny quietly burns down the house.

Six Organs Of Admittance - Shelter From The Ash

This much we know: Ben Chasny is a member of psych-blues soldiers Comets On Fire, has been name-checked by Devendra Banhart and has a copy of Misfits' Walk Among Us stuck in his car stereo (true story). But does Chasny, aka Six Organs Of Admittance, shit gold? It's more like golden grapes that he magically turns into wine, because on his 10th SOOA album in nine years(!), our man proves his haunting acoustic melodies are just getting better with age. His ethereal duet with the Magik Markers' Elisa Ambrogio on "Strangled Road" is gorgeous no matter how many times you press repeat; his ultra-fluid steel-string fretwork on "Goddess Atonement" is like a dare to fellow guitar-slinger Sir Richard Bishop; and the mesmerizing eight-minute stone-drone of "Final Wing" single-handedly transcends all the "neo-folk" bullshit Chasny has been saddled with over the years. We're pretty sure that's the riff from Heart's "Crazy On You" on the title track, but we kind of hope it's on purpose. (DRAG CITY; dragcity.com) J. Bennett
