The Great Deciever - Life Is Wasted On The LivingPosted by Laila Hanson on 20-May-08 @ 05:11 PM
[3/5]Led by vocalist Tomas Lindberg, man of a hundred bands (Disfear, Skit System, At The Gates, etc.), and guitarist Kristian Wåhlin, aka Necrolord, man of a hundred record covers (Dissection, Emperor, the Black Dahlia Murder, etc.), Sweden's the Great Deceiver prove it's possible to combine metal, hardcore and industrial music into something that doesn't result in a giant sucking sound and/or a remix album. On the band's third full-length, the d-beats come fast and furious, the HC breakdowns come soaked in guitar effects, and the classic Euro twin-axe metallurgy is used sparingly, as Wåhlin and fellow guitarist Johan Osterberg instead fire volleys of brief, heavily flanged/delayed lead shots across the stereo field. If these dudes didn't have Lindberg's raspy precision rage leading the way, it might sound considerably more generic, but as it stands, this album is only wasted if At The Gates decide to record a new one.
