Hipster rock, eclectica and bombast, oh, my!

Moros Eros - Jealous Me Was Killed By Curiosity

[4/5]
Moros Eros' Victory debut, 2006's I Saw The Devil Last Night And Now The Sun Shines Bright, served up a smart jigsaw puzzle of bright indie-pop and dark post-rock-hardly sounding like a typical Victory album. Their sophomore effort, Jealous Me Was Killed By Curiosity, finds the band flirting with slinky riff rock ("On My Side," "Choices"), moody bombast (the Jeff Buckley-esque "Old Friend") and pop eclectica ("Quit, You're Being Thoughtless"). With a scraggly high tenor akin to Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug, singer Zack Tipton & Co. create a kaleidoscope of sound, with the sum of the parts making an indie manifesto as rough around the edges as it is diverse. There are plenty of "play that shit again" moments: Tipton's Thomas Dolby vocal riffing on "Wake And Wait," the throbbing bass intro of "Pride And Joy" and the quirky "Lows And Highs." We hate to say we told you so, but we knew these dudes had potential when we put them in our AP&R column way back when. But where the band's first record proved they could stand on their own feet, Jealous shows Moros Eros have legs aplenty. (VICTORY) Casey Lynch
