Christine Fellows - Nevertheless

[3.5/5]
Christine Fellows continues to spin her plucky, sweet and delightfully simple tunes on her fourth solo effort, Nevertheless. Anchoring her songs around poetry by Marianne Moore, Fellows navigates through character traits and peaceful birds as deftly as politics, without overtly spelling out anything. From delicate piano ballads ("To A Prize Bird") to string-laced laments ("A Pantry Ballet"), images of construction paper decorations and Grandma's lace doilies spring to mind. Not all is innocent, though, as the slightly raucous "Not Wanted On The Voyage" opens with Fellows cheerfully suggesting, "Bury your dead and celebrate/The world is ending/Finally." The real jewel of this album, though, is "The Spinster's Almanac," her duet with husband John K. Samson of the Weakerthans, a track which could've been a Reunion Tour B-side. Pick this up before the next blizzard hits: Fellows' banjo-backed musings will warm up the coldest of winter days. (SIX SHOOTER) Rachel Lux
