MGMT - Oracular SpectacularPosted by Laila Hanson on 22-May-08 @ 03:05 PM
[4.5/5]You may recall MGMT from their opening slot on Of Montreal's 2005 tour-they're the guys who sang dreamy pop songs karaoke-style over their trusty iPod. While their set then may have been minimal, Oracular Spectacular is anything but. Now signed to a major label, the duo have definitely put their bigger budget to good use. Oracular is thick with countless layers of electronics, live instrumentation and vocal harmonies. The band's ability to craft ridiculously catchy tunes is apparent from the start: The synthy opener "Time To Pretend" is pure sugar. "Electric Feel" is even more addictive, with its funky, '80s R&B vibe-it's got a Hall & Oates thing going on. The goodness continues on "Kids," a song possessing the album's most hummable chorus (a few strange lines about haunting trees). Oracular may be a complex effort, but the verdict is simple-it's brilliant. (COLUMBIA) Eddie Fleisher Official Website: http://www.columbiarecords.com
