Dysrhythmia/Rothko - FracturesPosted by Laila Hanson on 22-May-08 @ 03:36 PM
[4/5]Dysrhythmia's half of this split release, "Earthquake," is a song that acts as a trailer to the eight years of the instrumental band's existence. All the elements that perk up the ears and fingers of shredheads (as well as the not-so-musically astute quiver in frustration and boredom) are present and accounted for. Like any good 14-minute instrumental, "Earthquake" swings from the experimental and ambient to the impressively rocking and musically intricate. If you have the attention span of a goldfish, this isn't the band for you. Neither are fellow instrumentalists Rothko, a band for those hipsters who were incensed when Mogwai sold more than 50 albums. Their ethereal, two-bass-no-guitar approach appears influenced by soundtracks, as "Tell Your Story To The Winds" could back the establishing shot of a classic Jodorowsky or Ridley Scott flick.
