Yes, it’s true: The ’80s friggin’ ruled
Sworn Enemy - ManiacalPosted by Laila Hanson on 28-May-08 @ 03:06 PM
[3/5]If nothing else, the Queens, New York-bred metalcore quintet Sworn Enemy do a fine job expounding upon their influences. For Maniacal, their third release, SE cook up an impressively thick stew of classic '80s Bay Area thrash metal and textbook, mosh-centric NYHC. Thankfully those influences are impeccable-Maniacal is a face-smashing collision of Slayer, Testament, Exodus and old Metallica with Sick Of It All, Biohazard and Madball, albeit some moments run a little too close for comfort. That doesn't make the record's gazillion riffs any less brutal, guest drummer Jordan Mancino's (As I Lay Dying) double-bass barrage any less explosive, or Maniacal any less kick-ass, overall. Sure, you've heard it before; but you're still going to bang your head like it's 1988 and walk away with one wicked neck cramp.
