[2.5/5]Test Icicles were going to change music, your life, the world. Or something. At least, that was what the British music press (and AP's editor in chief) believed for a few months in 2005. While critics might have gone a little hyperbole-crazy with the band, the fact is Test Icicles were, simply put, really fucking great. Since their split in early 2006, the members have remained busy as all hell, with Dev Hynes returning to home in the U.S. to record the debut full-length for his surprisingly not-at-all-dance-punk project, Lightspeed Champion. Bearing absolutely no resemblance to Hynes' prior work, Falling Off The Lavender Bridge is a collection of alt-country songs that alternate between darkly funny and deathly serious, cleverly coy and crappily dull. Recorded by Mike Mogis, Saddle Creek's in-house super-guy, the whole record oozes Midwest earnestness (as well as dusty Bright Eyes records), although a lot of material, like lead single "Galaxy Of The Lost," comes across like a forced exercise in hipster-Americana. Hynes is at his best on tracks like "Let The Bitches Die," where he's not aping Omaha's down-and-dirty vibe but rather melding it with his own well-developed indie-thrash sensibility.
