Afro-pop meets indie rock-and surprisingly, it’s kind of awesome

[3.5/5]New York City's music scene tends to live in a bubble, and with the exception of a few breakout acts (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio), most of the time the buzz on a band has already cooled by the time they make it to the Midwest. Hopefully that won't be the case for Vampire Weekend, because their debut album is one of the most inventive in recent memory. Combining elements of ska, reggae and afro-pop with traditional rock structures, songs like "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" have a carefree energy that will make you feel like you're on a beach in the Caribbean instead of a cramped studio apartment in Williamsburg. We're still not sure how four Caucasian Columbia University alumni can make music this authentic, but hopefully it will start a movement that extends far beyond Vampire Weekend's penchant for bongos.
