[3.5/5]Where his wan soundtrack to the video game SSX Blur was but a whisper, Junkie XL gets back to full-volume hooks on Booming Back To You, his fifth full-length platter. Booming stacks the deck with a full panoply of pop: Dirty French glitch-house with big-beat breakdowns ("Booming Back At You"), '80s goth-rock lodestones (his cover of the Siouxsie & The Banshees anthem "Cities In Dust," with vocals by L.A. rocker Lauren Rocket), stadium-filling techno (the naughty, Rocket-fueled "More"), Technicolor melodies ("Not Enough") and for a jazzy change of pace, a slow, sexy, smoldering number ("Mad Pursuit," featuring Electrocute's Nicole Morier). It's master-crafted to kill in the clubs or bop in the bedroom, and while it's just shy of sonic overkill in spots, JXL's enthusiastic proficiency is largely consistent throughout.
