BE YOUR OWN PET Get Awkward [3/5]
Cramming 15 songs into 30 minutes and change leaves little time for screwing around, and true to form, each track on Be Your Own Pet's second full-length Get Awkward is a blistering burst of chaotic energy cast off like a half-smoked cigarette. But surprisingly, there is a breadth of influence throughout, even if the energy level rarely falls below absurdly scorching and the sonic approach remains a fuzzy haze. Spitfire singer Jemina Pearl and band are still acting out like the neglected, snarling younger siblings of Yeah Yeah Yeahs (particularly on opening track "Super Soaked"). But they take detours into a mellower, '60s-style surf-rock on "Becky," channel the Motown punk of the Detroit Cobras on "The Kelly Affair," conjure Brit pub-punk on "Bummer Time" and a toss off a metal nod to Quiet Riot on "Twisted Nerve." It's a testament to the young band's precociousness that they've managed a mature take on reckless abandon. (ECSTATIC PEACE!/UNIVERSAL) Luke O'Neil
