Statehood - Lies And Rhetoric

Leave it to our nation's capital to once again shine a ray of hope for indie music. On their self-released debut, Washington, D.C.'s Statehood sound better and accomplish more musically than most bands backed by major label might. Shards of '90s indie bands echo through their songs-a little Jawbox here, some Seaweed there. The rhythm section is wetsuit tight, cracking out fist-in-the-air rock to booty-shaking funk (drummer Joe Easley and bassist Eric Axelson served time in the Dismemberment Plan). Combine them with a vocalist (Clark Sabine) who sings each word like it might be his last and a guitarist (Leigh Thompson) who writes memorable riffs like he's the King Midas of six-strings, and you end up with one of the most impressive debuts of the decade. Each song demands repeating, packed with mammoth choruses, creative melodies and addictive vigor. An album this good should start a movement. Let's hope this is only the beginning.
