Goldfinger - Hello Destiny

SideOneDummy Records to the rescue--again. Since 2000's Stomping Ground, it seems as though Goldfinger's relevance has been put further and further into doubt (thanks to questionable associations on frontman John Feldmann's part and an arguable foray into bad radio pop-punk). With Hello Destiny's throwback cover art, one would have to assume the band are trying to recapture those glory days. Frankly, Destiny doesn't even come close to the adolescent brilliance and execution of 1996's self-titled disc, but it's still one of the more important albums of the band's career.

Several of the tracks are decidedly upstroke and horn-dependent ("Get Up," "The Only One"); the band's refreshed, energized state ("Goodbye") is evident; and there's even a bit of vitriol for organized religion ("Handjobs For Jesus"). Even a goofy, quasi-hardcore cut like "Not Amused" seems genuine--but perhaps one's just satisfied to hear nothing as embarrassing or derivative as Disconnection Notice's "My Everything." Hello Destiny won't become a third-wave keystone like Goldfinger and 1997's Hang-Ups did, but it's a mildly successful comeback that thankfully ditches glossy power-pop for hints of what made Goldfinger successful in the first place.
