Sleep just might be on the horizon
Sleepercar - West TexasPosted by Laila Hanson on 07-Jul-08 @ 02:16 PM
[3/5]With the recent trend of punk frontmen going the alt-country route, it's becoming increasingly difficult to stand out among the crowd; unfortunately for Jim Ward (of Sparta fame) and his new venture, Sleepercar, they're unable to do just that. It's admittedly tough to go from post-rock to alt-country, and in a limited capacity, the songs that make up West Texas are actually enjoyable. The problem is, Ward struggles to present himself in a way that all successful frontmen have before him. He sounds confident and earnest in "You Should Run," but he's fatally lacking charisma and panache, characteristics used by even the most subdued folk troubadours to draw in audiences. There's no memorable hooks or lyrics on West Texas; it's all just... there. It's a shame, because there could have been just the gorgeous beginning.
