Soilent Green - Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of ConvictionPosted by Laila Hanson on 07-Jul-08 @ 03:05 PM
[3/5]Soilent Green's appeal is kind of mysterious, unless voyeurism is a big part of your musical judgment. They've been through van crashes, murders of band members and more. They share members with Eyehategod, Goatwhore and Crowbar, so it's no surprise their music is pretty much archetypal NOLA-core, combining sludge, doom, noise and grind into a potent, even intimidating sonic Molotov cocktail. The occasional acoustic interlude does nothing to lull the listener into any kind of false sense of security. But unless you're one of those people who are opposed to traditional song structure on principle, this is a pretty unappealing album. A lot of the riffs are good ones, but they rarely repeat more than twice, and choruses are totally absent. Basically, the disc is a patchwork quilt; some fragments are more interesting than others, but calling any of these tracks a "song" would be a stretch.
