Heavens - Patent Pending

[5/5] While living together in Los Angeles in the summer of 2004, Alkaline Trio frontman Matt Skiba heard a demo cassette of instrumental music recorded by F-Minus' Josiah Steinbrick. It was this meeting of musical minds that created Patent Pending, a collection of songs coupling Steinbrick's instrumental genius alongside Skiba's exploration of his lower vocal register. The songs-synth-heavy and influenced by classic post-punk outfits as Joy Division and Sisters Of Mercy- range in subject matter from the morbid imagery of heads in ovens ("Another Night") to the simple frustration with friends who never answer their cell phones ("Heather"). The title track crafts images of books with heavy endings and the dearly departed, while the album's closer ("Leave") finds Skiba begging the listener to stay, like a circus barker hawking the promise of an extra attraction. The cumulative effect of the songs on Patent Pending creates a chilling experience, where the imagery (both sonic and lyrical) stick with you far beyond the last notes played. (EPITAPH) Liz Van Pay
