Daughters - Hell Songs
Posted by Tim Karan on 06-Dec-06 @ 02:35 PM

[4/5] Daughters may hail from Providence, Rhode Island, but they're better than most in their surrounding scene. Their songs borrow an ADD writing aesthetic from the Locust (among others) and a jagged post-no wave guitar sound from even more contemporary bands. But it's NAME'S vocals-which bear a marked Lux Interior/Birthday Party-era Nick Cave influence-that make them so distinctive. Above all the jagged spazzing out and drum-pummeling breakdowns, NAME'S voice, sounding both sexually desperate and right on the edge of panic, pops up, commanding your immediate attention. It's also worth noting that it now takes longer to listen to a Daughters track than to read its title, which wasn't necessarily the case on their previous disc, Canada Songs.
