It’s about time Britain entered the post-hardcore sweepstakes.
Gallows - Orchestra Of Wolves
[4/5]
For their debut album, Watford, London, maniacs Gallows sucked all the juicy bits out of contemporary American punk trends-hardcore's breakdowns, math-metal's angularity, street punk's gang vocals and a handful of atmospheric elements from At The Drive-In and the Blood Brothers-to foment Orchestra Of Wolves. The rhythm section of Stuart Gili-Ross and Lee Barratt deftly navigate the directions guitarists Steph Carter and Laurent Barnard throw around, be they twisted ("Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn't Mean You're Safe") or straight-ahead (the title track). And it's hard not to envision a bloody-faced Frank Carter bellowing his lyrics over the barely conscious body of someone who tried to put one over on him. Simply put, Orchestra Of Wolves is a powerful start to a vibrant career; how long that career runs depends on how long their hearts can hold out-physically. (EPITAPH) Jason Pettigrew
