XXL - ¿Spicchiology?
[3/5/5] You gotta love the widgetization of music-that is, more and more, bands are remixing lineups, doing cameos and even joining forces to create entirely new sounds, as is the case with XXL, which features all of the members of Xiu Xui and Larsen. This is the second time both parties have dipped their collective peanut butter into each other's chocolate, but ¿Spicchiology? is a noticeably darker, disparate yang to their debut Ciautistico!'s brighter and more airy ying. Blame Italian terrorism, torture towers and church ills-recorded over two weeks in Europe, the cultural echoes have seeped into the music, permeating the eight songs with a heartache that is both claustrophobic and breathless. Instrumentals crash in Kubrickian splendor ("The Green Count Tapes") and float like new feather-light ash over a war zone ("So Easy, So Cheap"), dramatic Farfisa meanders in places ("Daydrinking") and gutsy tales of isolation and loss ("Last In The Society", "Little Mouse Of The Favelas") inspire.
